Produced in Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, prosecco is a white wine of Controlled Origin. In the nineties, thanks to the IGT certification (Typical geographical indication) became known and in 2009 achieved the DOC certification (of controlled origin).
The basic vine for the production of Prosecco is glera, whose grapes must constitute at least 85% of the total. A small fraction, however not exceeding 15% of the total, may consist of verdiso, bianchetta trevigiana, perera, long glera, chardonnay, pinot bianco, pinot grigio and pinot nero vinified in white.
Prosecco is the Italian wine most exported abroad. In 2014 it passed for the first time Champagne by the number of bottles sold worldwide. It should be emphasized that, due to sensory characteristics, production methodology, grapes and above all selling prices, these are two very different products.
